About Mentor
Dr. Tanaayaa P. Kamlakar is an accomplished legal academic with over 3 years of experience as Assistant Professor (Law) at Maharashtra National Law University, Mumbai. She currently serves as Director of the Centre for Criminal Justice and has held multiple leadership roles, including Course Director and Convener of ADR & Mediation initiatives. Dr. Kamlakar has extensive expertise in criminal law, constitutional law, and alternative dispute resolution, and has conducted high-level training sessions on newly enacted criminal laws for senior officers from All-India and Central Services, Defence Forces, Customs, and GST departments.

Course Structure:
Module 1: Introduction to Legal Research & Writing
- Understanding the importance and scope of legal research.
- Types of research: Doctrinal vs. Empirical.
- Legal writing models: IRAC, CRAC, CREAC.
- Ethics in research and plagiarism prevention.
Practical Tasks: - Analyze a legal article for structure and content.
- Summarize a recent Supreme Court/High Court judgment using the IRAC model.
Module 2: Research Methodology and Case Law Analysis- Identifying primary & secondary sources.
- Techniques for reading judgments and extracting ratio decidendi.
- Navigating legal databases like SCC Online, Manupatra, Indian Kanoon.
Practical Tasks: - Prepare briefs on 3 judgments from a chosen topic.
- Differentiate between obiter dicta and ratio decidendi.
Module 3: Legal Writing Techniques and Drafting
- Crafting research papers, memos, articles, and case comments.
- Focusing on clarity, tone, and proper citation.
- Understanding formatting styles: Bluebook, OSCOLA, ILI.
Practical Tasks: - Draft a 1000-word legal article using Bluebook citation.
- Peer review and feedback session on drafts.
Module 4: Legal Research Reports and Policy Briefs- Writing effective legal research reports and policy papers.
- Drafting legal opinions.
- Using data and references efficiently.
Practical Tasks: - Draft a mini legal opinion with AI assistance.
- Prepare a 2-page policy brief on a chosen legal reform topic.
Module 5: Final Assessment & Capstone Project- Select a legal issue (or receive one from the mentor).
- Conduct doctrinal or empirical research.
- Submit a 1500-word research paper utilizing AI tools.
- Present the findings in a live session.
Duration & Class Timings
The course begins on 24 January 2025 and will go on for 4 week, featuring engaging live classes held two times a week.
Class Schedule:
Days: Saturday & Sunday (weekend classes only)
Timings: 5:00 PM – 6:30 PM (Evening Sessions)
