About Mentor
Dr. Tanaayaa P. Kamlakar is an accomplished legal academic with over 2.5 years of experience as Assistant Professor (Law) at Maharashtra National Law University, Mumbai. She currently serves as Director of the Centre for Criminal Justice and has held multiple leadership roles, including Course Director and Convener of ADR & Mediation initiatives. Dr. Kamlakar has extensive expertise in criminal law, constitutional law, and alternative dispute resolution, and has conducted high-level training sessions on newly enacted criminal laws for senior officers from All-India and Central Services, Defence Forces, Customs, and GST departments.

About the course
This comprehensive 4-week program is designed to equip participants with a deep understanding of women’s rights in India, the impact of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA), and the practical skills to address gender-based legal issues. Through interactive weekend sessions, the course blends theory, law, and hands-on training to prepare students, legal professionals, and activists for real-world advocacy and litigation.

Week 1: Introduction to Women’s Rights in India
Saturday – Session 1: Foundations & Evolution of Women’s Rights
• Understanding gender justice and equality
• Overview of international conventions (CEDAW, UDHR)
• Evolution of women’s rights in Indian legal history
• Key constitutional provisions: Articles 14, 15, 16, 21 & 39
• Intersectionality and challenges faced by vulnerable groups (SC/ST, LGBTQ+ women, women with disabilities)
Sunday – Session 2: Overview of New Criminal Laws (2023)
• Introduction to Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) & Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA)
• Impact of new criminal codes on women’s rights
• Comparative Analysis with Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) & Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA)
• Gender-sensitive reforms in substantive and procedural law
Week 2: Gender-Based Violence and Legal Remedies
Saturday – Session 3: Offences Against Women under BNS
• Sections 63–66 BNS: Sexual harassment, voyeurism & stalking
• Sections 67–72 BNS: Rape, aggravated rape & gang rape
• Section 85: Cruelty by husband or relatives
• Key procedural protections under BNSS: FIR, investigation & medical examination
• Role of special courts, one-stop centres, police & legal aid
Sunday – Session 4: Practical Remedies & Case Studies
• Drafting and filing complaints/FIRs
• Understanding 41A notice & arrest safeguards for women
• Cybercrimes against women: Online abuse & image-based offences (BNS + IT Act)
• Landmark cases: Nirbhaya, Joseph Shine, Vishaka Guidelines
• Compensation & victim protection schemes
Week 3: Reproductive Rights and Family Laws
Saturday – Session 5: Reproductive Rights of Women
• MTP Act (2021): Safe and legal abortion rights
• Surrogacy Regulation Act & ART Act
• Article 21: Right to dignity, privacy & bodily autonomy
• Pregnancy-related offences under BNS

Sunday – Session 6: Family Law & Criminal Law Interplay
• Domestic violence: Criminal remedies under BNS & PWDVA 2005

Week 4: Women in Legal Profession & Advocacy Strategies

• Gender equality initiatives by BCI, Supreme Court & High Courts

Sunday – Session 8: Advocacy & Practical Engagement

• Role of NGOs, legal aid clinics & student forums
• Practical activity: Mock legal awareness campaign / complaint drafting

Duration & Class Timings
The course begins on 23 August 2025 and will go on for 6 week, featuring engaging live classes held two times a week.
