Constantly day by day social media is becoming a part of our lives. Without internet service everyone is paralyzed.
In India, the internet was available from 1986, for the educational and research community.
General public access to the internet in India began from 1995. Still there was not so much use of the internet. Also a supremely large number of adolescents and young adults had no access to the Internet.
But, after covid-19 by 2023, India has more than 900 million Internet users.
For covid situations people were isolated at home, thereupon the majority started using the internet for work from home, study from home etc., and consequently adolescents and young adults had access to the internet.
For educational needs parents handed gadgets, smartphones, tablets, laptops to their children because it was the only source of education. Since then teenagers get unprecedented access to the Internet.
In the era of digital connectivity, social media platforms have become essential parts of the lives of adolescents and young adults. While these platforms offer various benefits such as facilitating communication, fostering community, and providing access to information, there is growing concern about their impact on mental health.
Positive aspect:
Social media platforms provide freeway for adolescents and young adults to connect with friends and family members. These platforms offer opportunities for socialization and the development of relationships, particularly for individuals who may feel isolated in their offline life. Social media can serve as a platform for self-expression, allowing users to share their thoughts, ideas, and creative endeavors with a wider community from the entire world. Also social media platforms useful on information dissemination and awareness-raising on various social and political issues. Young people often use these platforms to engage in discussions about important topics, mobilize for social causes, and advocate for change. The ability to access diverse perspectives and connect with like-minded individuals can contribute to feelings of empowerment and belonging among adolescents and young adults.
Negative aspect:
Despite the positive aspects, excessive or problematic use of social media can have detrimental effects on mental health.
